This past Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with veteran tight end Zach Ertz in exchange for rookie cornerback Tay Gowan and a fifth-round pick in next year’s 2022 NFL Draft.
So, Eagles fans are now asking, who is Tay Gowan?
Gowan was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round (No. 223 overall) of last year's NFL Draft out of the University of Central Florida. Gowan made the team but hasn’t appeared in any games for the Cardinals this season. In just one season with UCF in 2019, Gowan played in 12 games and started nine of them, and tallied 31 tackles, 10 passes defended, and two interceptions. Tay is a 6-1, 186-pound cornerback, which is a great size for a CB and has fantastic speed. He wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine but during UCF’s Pro Day he ran a 4.49 40-yard dash. Gowan opted out of the 2020 season due to the birth of his daughter.
During last year's draft process, Gowan was on the Eagles’ radar. Philly’s General Manager Howie Roseman went on record and said: “In terms of Tay, he's a guy we spent a lot of time with during the draft process,” … “He was somebody that we would have considered with our sixth-round pick. He was in a group of names. He went right before we picked and he's a long corner. He's got tremendous speed.” … “He was an opt-out guy last year. We spent a lot of time with him personally before the draft. And again, it gives us a chance to add a young corner to that room.”
Gowan will have a chance to come in a compete immediately with an Eagles’ secondary who is in need of some help.
Tay Gowan will wear #36 for the Eagles as announced on Twitter.
