Philly fans, we are only a week into the season and there is already major concern about the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator, Jonathan Gannon. Last season was hard to judge the overall defensive performance because of how many holes this defense had. The way Gannon wanted to deploy his defense was limited by the overall talent. In the end, though show some promise and progress, they ultimately finished 19th overall per Pff.com
Fast forward to the 2022 offseason and general manager, Howie Roseman has brought in and drafted a multitude of talent to sure up this defense. With the likes of Haasan Reddick, James Bradberry, Kyzir White, and Jordan Davis now supporting midnight green we all as fans still got to see defensive end Josh Sweat drop into coverage.
Ultimately you always want your defense to play smart and aggressive, but there are times when they can't always be. Sometimes depending upon the opposing team, you are going to have to play conservatively, but not that conservatively and not for the entire game. When you have your Pro Bowl cornerbacks playing yards off from the line of scrimmage and having your running stuffing first-round pick sitting on the sideline, one would have to assume that Gannon had some conversations with Coach Sirianni, Roseman, and owner Jeff Laurie.
I honestly do think with how much Howie has invested into this season, Gannon's leash is going to be very short this season. However, it is not all doom and gloom. The talent on this defense and the overall scheme that this team is trying to run can be fixed with minimal tweaks, but it is something that they are going to have to commit to.
