Philadelphia fans have been very vocal about their frustrations with first year head coach Nick Sirianni’s offense to start the season.
The Philadelphia Eagles have stayed away from a traditional offensive approach where you see a lot of under center snaps and pro formations, instead you see quarterback Jalen Hurts take almost every snap from the shotgun and run the play from the RPO formation. The Eagles run the RPO pretty much on every play, and Hurts has shown more times that he tends to keep it himself, so defenses know what is coming.
Eagles running backs are only averaging 13 carries per game this season, which ranks last in the entire NFL, despite averaging 4.7 yards per carry, which ranks 6th in the league. Star running back, Miles Sanders, has just 57 carries for 270 yards and zero touchdowns through six games this season. Sanders has proven in the past to be able to carry the load as we saw in his first two seasons with the Birds as he eclipsed 800 yards in both seasons. But nothing was more frustrating than this past game against Tampa Bay. Sanders had one carry in the first half…one. He did end up with nine carries for 56 yards in the game as fans gave the team a standing ovation when the Eagles ran the ball more than once in the second half. Eagles’ offensive coordinator, Shane Steichen, has said that the offense needs Sanders to get going, “Miles is a heck of a back” … “we’ve got to get him going”.
The Eagles must make changes to their offensive play calling if they intend to make a run at the playoffs and turn this season around. Mile Sanders needs to have at least 16-20 carries per game, along with still getting him and rookie running back Kenneth Gainwell involved in the passing game. By establishing a solid and efficient running game should open up more big plays down the field and make it easier for Hurts to find his receivers and let them make plays in the open field. Until this happens, opposing defenses will continue to slow down this offense and our Eagles won’t be winning games.
